In 2021, PEBA and five planning, property and public law sets established a partnership scheme to provide mentors to groups presently under-represented at the planning, property, public and environmental law Bar. Since then, a further three sets have joined. Our partner sets are now: Cornerstone Barristers, Falcon Chambers, Field Court, Francis Taylor Building, Kings Chambers, Landmark Chambers, 39 Essex Chambers and No5 Chambers.
The scheme is intended to encourage undergraduates and postgraduates from groups that are not presently well represented at the Bar to consider becoming barristers. These under-represented groups include (but are not limited to):
- women;
- people from minority ethnic backgrounds;
- people with disabilities;
- LGBT+ people;
- people who spent time in care;
- people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds (as indicated, e.g., if an
- applicant was eligible for free school meals, or comes from a family on income
- support/universal credit);
- people who attended state schools, in particular non-selective state schools, for the
- majority of their secondary education (i.e. between the ages of 11 and 18 years); and
- people who were in the first generation in their family to attend university.
The Bar should be open to all who have the requisite ability, and we hope that the mentoring scheme will continue to help talented individuals who might not think the Bar is for them to understand what the Bar has to offer and how to become a barrister, and to assist in the application process.
